Wilma co-presented the “Indigenous Radio Program” with one of our “legendary presenters the late, great Eric Reys” on Cairns FM 89.1 Thursday afternoons 2 – 4 pm
Wilma was born in Cairns and is the second daughter of Maisie (nee Pitt) and Jack Reading. She commenced her education at Parramatta State School and continued on to Cairns State High School . Wilma was selected in the State Softball Team as shortstop and pitcher. While competing with the team in Brisbane , they went to the Piccadilly Arcade Coffee Shop to celebrate a team mate's birthday where Wilma was encouraged to preform some songs with the band. She was spotted by talent scout Lali Hegi. He wrote a letter to her parents offering Wilma a contract and as they say “The rest is history” … Opportunities lead to her performing at the Goodwood Hotel in Singapore . 1963 Ken Moss, the director of the Hilton Hotels in Australia contracted her to preform at the Official Opening of the Hilton Hotel in Hong Kong . For the next 30 years Wilma travelled and performed all across the world, including appearance at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas , Copacabana in New York and television appearances with Johnny Carson in NY. In Europe she performed on BBC TV with Harry Seacombe, Morecambe and Wise and Engelbert Humperdinck. Wilma performed at Talk of the Town, London Palladium and also played Julie in Show Boat on the West End Theatre. 1980 she toured Russia with the Russian Symphony Orchestra. As communism was in control she was restricted to only being able to bring along her own Conductor/pianist and Drummer from the UK. 2003 Wilma returned to Cairns to be with her family. She now does charity shows for the local community and teaches singing at TAFE to help young Australians to fulfil their dreams as Professional Singers … a great Australian.
